Nelsonite Wood Stabilizer

We now have the ability to dip our exterior products in Nelsonite. We plan to make this a standard for all of our exterior products in the near future. To view or download the product brochure from Nelsonite about the product  Nelsonite 15B02 please click here.

Why are we offering it and what does it cost you the customer?

The biggest reason for us to implement this into our product line is for the stabilization and dimensional control that it provides. We believe that this will give you a better product for a longer period of time. However the addition of the Nelsonite will not supersede our warranty requirements, the products still need to be sealed with an oil based finish or marine varnish. We will soon be amending our warranty to include the use of the Nelsonite, yet the products must still be finished in the time frame stated in the warranty. The cost once it has been fully implemented into our product line will be figured into the initial quote. It will be a marginal increase, and will be well worth it in the long run.

What is Nelsonite?

It in short is a stabilizing agent formulated to prevent many of the problems that occur with an exterior product made from wood. It works by deeply penetrating the surface of the wood, and lines the cell walls of the wood itself. Once it has cured it blocks the moisture and humidity movement through the cell walls. This process gives the wood greater dimensional stability and weather ability.

What does the Nelsonite do the wood?

The Nelsonite will help to reduce the shrinking and swelling of the wood. This will help to eliminate or minimize the sticking, warping, or splitting of the wood caused by the addition or subtraction of moisture.

What about finishing over Nelsonite?

As stated before it improves the finishing process by giving it a more uniform and even color. The finish must be applied according to the warranty for the exterior product. Traditional finishing processes leave only a very thin film on the surface of the wood, which must be maintained and kept up year after year. This basic finish provides the bare minimum when it comes to moisture protection. The benefit of the Nelsonite is that it acts in conjunction with the proper finish to provide maximum moisture protection. Since Nelsonite repels water, the use of water based stains is not recommended at all. It is best to use an oil based product, and to apply the correct amount of coats.
