Why do you need an Impact unit?

After the destruction caused by hurricane Andrew, it was decided that tougher requirements for entry units were needed.  In order for a unit to be certified as Impact rated the unit must undergo rigorous testing and be certified by an engineer.  The doors are tested for air and water leakage, impact resistance, structural pressure, and forced entry.  The door is securely placed in a testing chamber and shot by a 2x4 out of a canon to simulate flying debris.  Then the unit is put under negative and positive pressure 9000 times in a row to see if it can survive the hurricane force winds.
